Athens, Ga - The Georgia Bulldogs (3-0) welcomed Penn St. (0-2) to athens on Sunday night as the teams met for the first time since the 1983 Sugar Bowl. In that game PSU, led by quarterback Todd Blackledge, upset the #1 ranked Bulldogs in Hershel Walker's last game and ended UGA's shot at their second national title in 3 years. The 2012 Bulldogs exacted revenge and then some on the Nittany Lions. After PSU jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead it was all UGA. The Bulldogs scored 28 first quarter points on their way to a 91-30 rout of Penn St. The Georgia offense played the best that it has all season, but that unit received plenty of help from the defense and special teams. The UGA defense had 6 interceptions and special teams averaged almost 30 yards per punt return.
"I thought our defense played pretty good. We forced 6 turnovers and they were only 3 of 13 on third downs. They did score 14 junk points in the 4th quarter but the game was well in hand by then."
Offensively UGA was again led by superior quarterback play from Ali Dunn. The QB finished 44 of 48 for 628 yards and 13 touchdowns with only 1 interception. His favorite target was again Kevin Price who had 14 receptions for the second game in a row and added 255 yards and 6 touchdown catches.
"Offensively we played more consistant. There were probably only 3 or 4 plays that I would like to have back. We obviously missed Hicks in the running game but we will get that worked out. I feel better about this team today than I did yesterday."
Athens, GA - The Georgia Bulldogs opened up 2010 where 2009 left off...winning by a lot. Clemson was expected to give UGA a tough test with their #6 preseason ranking but after the first quarter it was all Dawgs. Clemson had experienced very good success the past couple years, but with their coach leaving for Oklahoma in the offseason, the uniforms were the only thing that resembled the Clemson of the past.
Matt Stafford coming off his redshirt year threw for 538 yards and 7 TD's while having only 2 incompletions. The addition of freshmen receivers Scott Marks and Jovan Jones gave Stafford two speedsters to compliment the returning heisman winner Wright at runningback. Wright had 66 yards rushing and 170 yards receiving. Jones and Marks combined for over 200 yards receiving and 4 touchdowns.
The UGA defense left a little bit to be desired though. After replacing all the linebackers the Dawgs gave up 150 yards rushing and 400 yards total to the Tigers.
"Hopefully we can figure out some things on defense between now and next week or we will be in trouble against Notre Dame. The offense was very impressive and very efficient today. Matt played like the 5th year senior that he is and those two freshmen receivers were very impressive."
Atlanta, Ga - The Georgia Bulldogs were seeking revenge for their only loss in the past 2 years and revenge is what they got on Thursday night over the Auburn Tigers. Andrew Wright threw the offense over his shoulders with 120 yards rushing and another 140 yards receiving. Joe Cox played much better than he did in the regular season matchup where he had 3 turnovers and another costly fumble. This time Cox went 13-14 for 230 yards and 3 TD's and didn't turn the ball over.
It was the defense that stole the show from the beginning though by forcing 3 turnovers and a stop on 4th down in the first 4 Auburn possessions. When it was all said and done the UGA defense held Auburn to 120 yards of offense and forced 5 turnovers. The unit was out to make amends for giving up 21 points in the previous matchup and they did just that by giving up only 8 points.
UGA started the scoring with a touchdown on their first drive and after 3 impressive goaline stands by Auburn, UGA would have to settle for fieldgoals and take a 16-0 lead into the half. UGA tacked on another touchdown early in the second half to take a 23-0 lead before Auburn got on the board with a long touchdown drive to cut the lead to 23-8 heading into the 4th quarter. That quarter belonged to UGA though, as the Dawgs put up 21 points including a controversial 40 yard touchdown pass with 10 seconds left.
"We had to get our swagger back and start playing some UGA football after that loss to Auburn and I think we have done that. Now we need to cap off our season with an impressive Sugar Bowl win and then turn our attention to the 2010 season."
